Flyleaf shares their touring tips on Digital Tour Bus! - Leave a comment

Flyleaf-promo-300x240This set of Tour Tips was written by the platinum selling rock band, Flyleaf! You can check out their top five tips for being on the road, after the break.

1. Hand sanitizer! I carry it with me everywhere because you never know if the venue bathroom or bus is outta soap : )

2. Stock up on your favorite DVD’s/books. As exciting as the road can be there is also down time and especially when I’m resting my voice, I need something to do. Also, getting into a new season of a show is a must. I just finished the Netflix original “House of Cards.” Intense.

3. Be gracious and kind to those around you. Though I get along great with Flyleaf, you are all crammed on a bus together so it helps to be a team player. Selfishness isn’t a good trait for bus life.

4. Get out and explore! I am in a different city everyday on the road so I make sure to see what I can and treat my job like a vacation : ) work and play is the best motto!

5. Dry shampoo, coffee, my teddy bear, pictures of my friends and family back home, a sense of humor and a cell phone to reach others with a sense of humor, music in my headphones (and itunes gift cards handy) are a must for me on tour!!

Kristen’s Interview with CrypticRock.com - Leave a comment

Crypticrock.com- That was a great tour and you did put on a great performance. There is now a new single out called “Something Better” featuring Sonny of P.O.D. The single is off the new Flyleaf EP Who We Are out July 9th. How was your first recording and writing experience with the band for this material?
The writing experience was really awesome. I was really stoked on how the guys were really open with everyone’s ideas. We just all came in with different things we had and we collaborated it. It felt like a really good collaboration and a positive environment to write, so that’s key to making songs you love. “Something Better” is the single we decided to take to the studio. Working with Howard Benson was awesome, he really pushes you. I wanted my vocals to be true to what I do but also push it a little bit because it’s more a rock pop song, I feel really good about it.

Crypticrock.com- Well that’s something to look forward to and see a full length album in the future. Now on July 11th you are headed out on a Co-headlining tour with P.O.D. How excited are you about this tour?
Kristen May- I’m so stoked. I used to listen to P.O.D. when I was younger and I’ve always been a big fan of Sonny. I’m just excited to get out there and play “Something Better” and we’ll probably play another new song that we’ve written that’s unreleased. I just love playing live so I can’t wait.

Crypticrock.com- That is a good outlook and it will be interesting to see where the road takes you. What are some of your musical influences?
Kristen May- I feel like it’s ever evolving. Growing up my parents listened to a lot of classic rock, Led Zeppelin, The Who. My mom listened to Joni Mitchell, Carol King, and Stevie Wonder. When I heard Radiohead, Sunny Day Real Estate and Bjork, those were three of the musicians that really changed my perspective on music. Those definitely influenced me and as things progress I’ve been lately into Ellie Golding and I love The Temper Trap, and MGMT. More kind of electronic but a little bit experimental. I’ve always loved pop, I can’t get away from pop. I’ll totally jam out to the latest Selena Gomez with my niece and I can’t help it (laughs).

Sameer Interview with MayTheRockBeWithYou.com! - Leave a comment

How did you know that Kristen was the right person for the job?
You know from meeting her, that initial meeting she and me clicked right away and after getting to talk with her and hearing her convictions and her take on the music and just her heart, that was a huge part of it. Then when we went into the practise room ad from that first note she sang we were just blown away, she’s so good and so passionate.

Is there any chance of road testing some new ones while you’re out on tour to see if they work?
Yeah, I think we’re coming up on a tour in August and coming to Australia in August and I think by then we’ll have a few new songs that we’re going to add into the set.

You mentioned that you worked with producer Howard Benson once again, what did he bring to the table on this record that you may not have thought to do on ‘New Horizons’ or on your previous two releases?
He’s starting to focus more on the progression of what’s going on in music right now and trying to shift away from the active rock to the more modern rock but we’ll see how that pans out because we’re a rock band at heart, we’ll let the songs write themselves. On this record he was really good at bringing up the lyrics, bringing up the songs and I think that’s what he’s done on these songs.

Now looking back at your first album, it’s around eight years since then, but over the course of the three albums, how have you personally seen yourself evolve as an artist?
It’s like a subtle evolution, you become a better player without really trying, you’re just playing every night and writing songs and being around guys like Corey Taylor and Jim Root and Jon Davis and Munky from Korn, the P.O.D. guys, all the heavy hitters, just being around that, it’s like their presence infiltrates your being in a kind of way *laughs* but they permeate and if you’re in that area with them they kind of rub off on you a little bit here and there. I don’t know, it’s an unconscious evolution, you take input from all these different artists and put them into your playing and put them into your art without even thinking.

FL2013-PUB3

Flyleaf have teamed up with Revolver to stream their new five-track EP, Who We Are, in its entirety right here right now. The EP, which will be released on July 9, features four live songs from their latest full-length, New Horizons, including “Call You Out,” “Fire Fire,” “Broken Wings,” and “Sorrow,” along with the new track “Something Better,” which features Sonny Sandoval from P.O.D. and is the band’s first original song with new frontwoman Kristen May. Check it out at RevolverMag.com.

Interview: Flyleaf’s Pat Seals talks Kristen May, Who We Are and Black Jelly Beans - 2 Comments

The difficulty of touring and especially promoting an album recorded with a different singer was not lost on the band, and they considered a number of options, before ending up with new EP, Who We Are. “We did consider whether we should put Kristen on one of the tracks, and push it to radio. But we figured, since we’re this far along, let’s just make some new music instead, and give the fans something fresh. (Who We Are) is a bit of a move forward. It’s still Flyleaf based, still guitar, bass and drums, still has loudness, but there’s also a pop based sensibility to it. The new EP has a song called “Something Better” on it, plus 5 live tracks, with Kristen singing, from the previous records.”

Now we don’t often get the chance to talk woodcarving during rock interviews, but it’s a passion for Pat which has also translated into the artwork. “Yes, welcome to the middle ages. My sister is a printmaker, and she introduced me to it, and i’ve been addicted to it ever since. It’s a good way to turn all my stupid ideas into something positive instead of talking someone’s ear off.”

Something Better + Who We Are EP! - 3 Comments

As Flyleaf gear up for the kickoff of their summer co-headlining tour with P.O.D., the band has something special to share with their fans. On July 9, Flyleaf will unleash ‘Who We Are,’ a new EP of live songs recorded during the band’s recent tour with their new singer Kristen May.

The five song release mixes the best of old-school Flyleaf like ‘Sorrow’ from their 2005 self-titled release with new songs like ‘Broken Wings’ from 2012?s ‘New Horizons.’ The EP also features a studio version of the new song ‘Something Better’ with very special guest Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. lending a hand.

The band recently commented on their forthcoming EP, sharing their excitement about working with Sandoval on the song. “The live tracks came from our 2013 Winter tour with Drowning Pool. ‘Something Better’ is one of the first songs we wrote with Kristen May. It was an awesome experience writing together! Plus, having Sonny from P.O.D. on this track was really special. We’ve been fans of theirs for years, and it was an honor to do this collaboration. We think y’all will love it!”

Listen to the new song HERE!! I personally love it! It’s a lot different than what we’re used to, which is to be expected. Such upbeat, happy vibes. Great song, guys! :]
